The rock organization Roderick from Osijek consolidates its discography on a double CD

“Post punk on our meridians in the second half of the 1980s yielded exceptionally interesting gothic fruits. Bands from Triglav to Vardar emphatically changed the poetic and melodic everyday life of rock music, admittedly far from the mainstream, but deeply enough to initiate some processes that would be exploited years later through the most inspiring achievements in recent urban music. Some of them went after instruments to ensure the desired expressive continuity, while others remained in myths, legends, wilderness and the possibilities of subsequent revaluation.

That is precisely why we are witnessing the unified discography of Roderick, the Osijek rock organization that has combined classic rock appearance and a multimedia art platform with continuous transformation, from the membership to the name itself (in the second part of their career they were called Roderick Novy). At the same time, each phase of their work contains peculiarities that are often not attractive, but these animosities create new qualitative plantings”, writes Bojan Mušćet in the booklet accompanying the double CD of Roderick, i.e. the Roderick Novy group, entitled “1941-1971-1981-1991”.

The first CD contains the albums “Bilo jednom na Balkanu” (Once upon a Time in the Balkans) by Roderick and “Roderick in the Theater” by Roderick Novy. The second CD contains the albums “Roderick” by Roderick and “O čemu pjevamo kada pjevamo o ljubavi” (What We Sing about when We Sing about Love) by Roderick Novy. Roderick was founded by the musician and publicist Branko Kostelnik in the early 80s, and during the 90s six albums and four compilations were released under the new name.

The impressive vocals of Ksenija Gottwald and the artistic restlessness of Branko Kostelnik were Roderick’s ID, which in 1990 brought the band closer to a wider audience. Already then, according to Vinko Barić in the book “Hrvatski punk i novi val” (Croatian Punk and New Wave), they became definitely the most significant, most influential and best Osijek and Slavonian band of the eighties, in the town of Kićo Slabinac, Dinamiti and Dado Topić.

“Osijek has always had well-known and excellent musicians. However, this is not just about music. Roderick were the first, under the influence of punk and the new wave, but also other arts, to introduce awareness, concept and attitude. Three things determined their poetics, which were introduced first, and which elevated them from the rest of the scene. Multimediality in expression, i.e. the use of multimedia language (image, quotations, fanzines, video, films...). Awareness of the social and musical context. And the fight for difference, the right to be different, for a personal style and attitude, which had special weight and meaning in the system and society of that time”, says Mušćet.
