The debut album “Na drugim brzegu tęczy” (On the other Side of the Rainbow) by Breakout was released in 1969. The LP is considered as one of the best albums in the history of Polish rock. From the first sounds, it is clear that this is something different. Music like never before existed in Poland. Yes, bands associated with big beat sometimes looked for inspiration in the circle of rock counterculture, but they did it in a not very daring way. Meanwhile, Tadeusz Nalepa & Breakout simply started playing rock.
The album includes the powerful Hendrix-inspired track “Poszłabym za tobą” (I Would Follow You), and “Gdybyś kochał, hey!” (If You Loved, hey!). The album includes a bonus recording, the song “Za siódmą górą” (Behind the Seventh Mountain), which was released on the single that preceded the LP.
Breakout’s second studio album, released in 1970 is a classic of Polish blues. All songs were written by Tadeusz Nalepa, with lyrics by Bogdan Loebl and Franciszek Walicki (under the pseudonym Jacek Grań). The band features two outstanding musicians: Włodzimierz Nahorny and Józef Skrzek.
Tadeusz Nalepa recalled working on the album: “The nineteen-year-old, very talented pianist and bassist Józef Skrzek turned out to be a musical discovery. Working with him and Włodek Nahorny was a very important experience in my career. Where are those times and those musicians, when an album was recorded in a week…”
The album features many unique and timeless compositions, including: ‘Piękno’ (Beauty), “Nie znasz jeszcze życia” (You Don’t Know Life yet), “Dziwny weekend” (Strange Weekend) and “Skąd taki duży deszcz” (Why such Heavy Rain). Beautiful music and great, wise lyrics, all in the original vinyl sound. Simply good old blues...
The album “Blues” was released in 1971 and is considered the peak achievement of Breakout. It managed to combine all the necessary ingredients of a true blues rock masterpiece. Nalepa’s excellent compositions, perfect performance, sound and outstanding, universal lyrics by Bogdan Loebl.
The following hits come from this album: “Ona poszła inną drogą” (She Went the Other Way), “Kiedy byłem małym chłopcem” (When I Was a Little Boy), “Oni zaraz przyjdą tu” (They Will soon Come here), “Co stało się kwiatom” (What Happened to the Flowers). It was this album that set the path that Tadeusz Nalepa followed consistently throughout the rest of his career.
“Mira” was the first signature album by Breakout band singer Mira Kubasińska, released in the same year 1971 as the hit album “Blues”. It containes music close to Mira Kubasińska’s interests, combining elements of blues, rock and folk known to fans of the Breakout group from their previous albums. Bogdan Loebl was the author of most of the lyrics, while Tadeusz Nalepa was responsible for the musical side.
Mira Kubasińska was accompanied by the band composed of Tadeusz Nalepa (guitars), Jerzy Goleniewski (bass guitar), Tadeusz Trzciński (harmonica), Jan Mazurek (drums). Włodzimierz Nahorny (saxophone) also took part in the recordings.
“Mira” is a kind of supplement to the first two records of Breakout, and a testimony to what an important part of the band this unique female voice was at the time.
“Karate” (Karate) is Breakout’s fourth studio album. It was released in 1972. The album is a musical continuation of the legendary “Blues” album, in whose shadow it remained for many years. With time, however, it turned out that “Karate” is not a weaker release. On the contrary, today it appears as material just as captivating as its famous predecessor. It is a classic of Polish rock and blues.
All songs were written by Tadeusz Nalepa and Bogdan Loebl. The album features many unique and timeless compositions, including “Powiedzmy to” (Let’s Say It), “Daję ci próg” (I’ll Give You a Threshold), “Rzeka dzieciństwa” (The River of Childhood), “Śliska dzisiaj droga” (The Road Is Slippery today) and “Takie moje miasto jest” (That’s My City). Beautiful music and great, wise lyrics. Simply good old blues... The album was awarded with a gold disc in 1974 for the sales of 150.000 copies.
The iconic “Ogień” (Fire) is the second album by Breakout featuring Mira Kubasińska, and the sixth in the band’s discography. It was released in 1973. All songs were written by the long-time songwriting duo Tadeusz Nalepa and Bogdan Loebl. Musically, it is more rock-oriented and diverse than the album “Mira”.
The album features many unique and timeless compositions, including: the 12-minute “Wielki ogień” (The Great Fire) with guitar improvisation, the rock songs “Na dnie moich oczu” (At the Bottom of My Eyes), “Masz to dziś” (You Have It today), and the ballad “Czarno-czarny film” (Black and Black Film). Great music and beautiful, wise lyrics, all in the original vinyl sound. The entire album is characterised by an excellent hard rock sound.
Breakout’s cult album “Kamienie” (Stones) premiered in 1974 and is counted among the most important achievements of Polish blues.
All songs were written by the long-standing songwriting partnership of Tadeusz Nalepa & Bogdan Loebl. The album features many exceptional and timeless compositions, including “Modlitwa” (Prayer) and the title track “Kamienie” (Stones), but also the classic blues “Czułość niosę tobie” (I Carry Tenderness to You) or “Koło mego okna” (Around My Window).
Nalepa himself, although not initially fond of the album, said years later that “the best tracks are on “Kamienie””. We recommend it to all blues fans, but not only. Beautiful music and great, clever lyrics.
Released in the spring of 1977, the album “NOL – Niezidentyfikowany obiekt latający” (UFO – Unidentified Flying Object) is one of the most underrated and at the same time unique moments in the history of the band Breakout. Although the band’s line-up underwent many changes, Tadeusz Nalepa remained faithful to his vision – combining blues roots with new sounds and funk energy. “NOL” also marks the return of Mira Kubasińska and Nalepa singing together, with room for both lyrical ballads (the excellent “Biel” (White), present in the band’s repertoire since 1974), as well as a dynamic marriage of funk rhythms, blues riffs and – a one-off novelty in the band’s history – a modest synthesiser part (“Gdzie mnie wiodą” (Where They Lead Me)).
The album also features excellent musicians: Bogdan Lewandowski (Hammond organ) and Andrzej Tylec (drums). Songs such as “W pochodzie codzienności” (In the March of Everyday Life), “Biel” (“White”) and “Słuchaj rytmu” (Listen to the Rhythm) demonstrate the maturity and diversity of the band’s sound. Mira Kubasińska’s vocal parts are more prominent than Tadeusz Nalepa’s throughout the album. However, Tadeusz sang “W pochodzie codzienności” (In the March of Everyday Life), one of the most interesting and important songs in Breakout’s entire oeuvre.
“ZOL – Zidentyfikowany obiekt latający” (IFO – Identified Flying Object) is one of the most interesting releases of Polish rock music from the late 1970s, driven by the power of Nalepa’s laconic riffs – a raw, honest and emotional album. Recorded in 1979 at the Polskie Nagrania studio, it was released in 1980. Although it did not gain widespread publicity at the time of its release, today it is considered one of Breakout’s most authentic and mature albums.
The basis here is still blues music, but filtered through Tadeusz Nalepa’s rock fascinations (Free!). Songs such as “W cieniu bluesa” (In the Shadow of Blues), “Gdy masz przyjść” (When You Come) and “Pożegnalny blues” (Farewell Blues) showcase the leader’s compositional maturity and the excellent form of the band, in which the rhythm section of Krystian Wilczek and Marek Surzyn shines.
In terms of lyrics, Bogdan Loebl remained faithful to his poetics – most of the songs are lyrical, emotionally charged texts, related to his poetic work.
The last album in Breakout’s discography. “Żagiel ziemi” (The Sail of the Earth) was created as a part of a rock triptych (along with albums by Budka Suflera and Skaldowie), commissioned for the Olympic Games in Moscow (1980).
Although the project was primarily intended to be a major commercial venture, Tadeusz Nalepa remained true to his artistic convictions. As he recalled, when attempts were made to impose on him that “Olympic music should be cheerful”, he preferred to “write blues” because he composed as he felt.
It is this fidelity to his musical convictions that is the greatest strength of the album today. The result is extremely diverse material – from the powerful hard rock riff in “Maraton” (Marathon), through the classic blues rock “Ile Olimpiad” (How Many Olympics), to the guest appearance of Roman “Pazur” Wojciechowski in “Historia dysku” (History of the Discus). The unusual culmination of the band’s career and a unique “sound photograph of time”.
