Croatia Records Release Information

The enriched vinyl reissue of “5. April ’81”, which has arrived 40 years after the publication of the original album, which after “Koncert kod Hajdučke česme” (Concert at Hajduk Fountain) has been the second live release of Bijelo Dugme (White Button), the most popular and successful Yugoslavian rock band of all time. “Moreover”, says music critic Bojan Mušćet in the booklet of the reissue, “Goran Bregović and Bijelo dugme precisely positioned themselves among the new, young audience, who was growing up on punk and new wave”.

“The album was promoted on a big Yugoslavian tour, where they also performed on 2 March 1981 a big concert in Zagreb’s Sport Center. Unexpectedly, they decided to do another performance in Zagreb in the club Kulušić to end the tour. The residential place of Yugoslavian new wave in Zagreb hosted Bijelo Dugme for a performance that was not advertised. However, on 5 April 1981, word of mouth advertising filled Kulušić to the last place,” says Mušćet. It was this concert that presented Bijelo dugme in a different light, energetically superior to other live editions, and the relationship between the band and the audience was like that of the legendary “Queen at Live Aid”, only in a much smaller audience. Željko Bebek has shown that he is one of the best frontmen in the history of rock in Yugoslavia, and the band has shown that it had a lot to say in the times of the new wave boom as well. Musćet continues: “The album “5. April ’81” reveals all the ingredients that made Bijelo dugme big, strong and indispensable at the time, and 40 years later, its importance has not diminished. I am convinced that it will be the same when this album will reach its 100th anniversary.”

The sound master of the concert was Hrvoje Hegedušić, who recalled those moments and emphasized that the performance of a band in Kulušić was a matter of prestige. At that time, he was the sound engineer in the music production of Radio Zagreb, and the interest in recording public performances was great, because then they got new sound circuits with their 24-channel technology. Therefore, it was logical that a giant like Bijelo Dugme would be interested in using such a technology. He also recalled an interesting moment from mixing the album in the famous “Četvorica” (Four) in the Šubićeva street: “Goran Bregović was not satisfied with the sound of the recorded drum break in one song, and since everyone had already traveled with the instruments, it was necessary to improvise. I took an ordinary, wooden chair, an ordinary dynamic microphone, and Goran took a baton and “played” the part on the chair. Try to find that place on the record – you won’t succeed! The sounds of the drums are no different from the sounds of that chair. Now tell me those weren’t great times.”

In addition to the texts by Bojan Mušćet and Hrvoje Hegedušić, the booklet is also decorated with a poster and an autograph card with the signatures of all band members, which Musćet provided from his private archive, and there is also a photo of Siniša Bosanac from Kulušić with Goran Bregović in the main focus.

In 1981, the album brought with it certain controversies because of the cover, and in a conversation with the author of the photo session and connection, Sarajevo photographer and designer Dragan S. Stefanović, we have learned that the original conception of the cover did not include such a picture at all. So with his permission, as well as the permission of the father of the unfortunately deceased girl, the Bosnian actor, TV presenter and entertainer Mladen “Troka” Jeličić, a new cover without the nude picture in the middle was compiled that is the most faithful representation of the original concept. The artistic design of the reissue was done by the top designer Darko Kujundžić. In contrast to the original blank back of the packaging, the reissue has a quoted concert announcement by the iconic Yugoslavian music critic and journalist Dražen Vrdoljak. The vinyl comes with a download code for downloading the mp3 versions of the songs that were remastered from the original tapes in Croatia Records Studio by Mauro Širol.

“Dobra večer i dobro došli u Kulušić. Na posljednjem koncertu u okviru jugoslovenske turneje “Doživjeti stotu” pred vama su Điđi, Vlado, Zoran, Željko i Goran. U dv’je riječi – Bijelo Dugme!” (Good evening and welcome to Kulušić. At the last concert as part of the Yugoslavian tour “Doživjeti stotu” (Living to Be a Hundred), Điđi, Vlado, Zoran, Željko and Goran are in front of you. In two words – Bijelo Dugme!) – Dražen Vrdoljak, Kulušić Zagreb
