Two great life anniversaries, a selection of essential songs

This year, the Ulrych siblings celebrate a combined 150 years of lives filled with music. In that time they have offered a lot of music, from the big beat sixties to the thematic seventies and a long period with Javory (The Maples) to the current intersection of electric throwback with folk friends. This time, in LP (12 songs, some on vinyl for the first time) and CD (15 songs) formats, Petr has chosen what they themselves consider the most valuable of their rich discography.

The compilation thus bends the arc from the hit recordings with Atlantis, reminds us of “Odyssey” or “Nikola Šuhaj”, confirms the greatness of the inclination towards folk and the original music arising from it to the joy of the now frequent combination of Ulrychovi, Javory Beat and Hradišťan. The collaboration between composer, lyricist and singer Petr and his ever-amazingly-voiced sister Hana is among the best that our popular music has produced in the last six decades. Even those who don’t follow the Ulrychs’ work consistently must be won over by the songs’ endearingly natural familiarity.

From where? From compositional originality, brightened by gorgeous singing and an honest search for musical roots.

Where to? To be remembered for the strength of Brno’s big beat beginnings, but above all for the feeling of grateful belonging to Moravian folk music in other parts of our country.
