If we talk about the legendary festivals of popular and rock music in Yugoslavia, the Boom Festival can certainly be placed in one of the most important places.

“As a kid, I dreamed that I could organize a Woodstock Festival in Yugoslavia. And so, back in the sixties, as a teenager, I went to a rock festival in Vienna, where I got the idea to do some kind of Woodstock in the Yugoslavian way. I managed to do that back in 1972 in the Tivoli Hall in Ljubljana. And the festival was sold out”, says Branko “Lazo” Lazarević, who, together with the iconic manager Vladimir “Miha” Mihaljek, started the story that would conquer the seventies of the last century.

“We did the concert with Pero Dimitrijević, who led Sloveniakoncert, and in the same year we got the money to record the festival live on slightly wider tapes. Miro Bevc, who had the best studio in Ljubljana, the Akademik studio, recorded the festival. The Boom Festival was actually called the Yugoslavian Pop Rock Festival, but over time we renamed it to Boom”, says Miha and adds: “Whoever performed at the Boom Festival went further, on even bigger stages and under bigger spotlights. It was a place that could lift you up! But if you asked me today to organize the Boom festival, I don’t think I would do it. It was still youth-craziness.”

The first edition of the Boom Festival, then called Pop Festival Ljubljana 72, brought together iconic names of the music scene at that time: Nirvana, Indexi, Drago Mlinarec, Ivica Kiš and Tomaž Domicelj, Alarm, Grupa 777, Mladi Levi, Had , Ivica Percl, Grupa Marina Škrgatića and Time. The original release on Helidon has been in high demand on the collector’s market.

Today, when the Boom festival marks half a century and when we can definitely call it the Yugoslavian Woodstock in many aspects, the double album is once again available. All the songs have been released on 180 gram vinyl, along with accompanying texts from the festival organizers and a download code for mp3 versions of the songs. The artistic design of the reissue was done by Darko Kujundžić.
