Croatia Records Release Information

At the end of November 2021, the reissue of the cult album “The Zagreb Jazz Kvartet” by the Zagreb Jazz Kvartet was released on CD, and now the vinyl version of the album remastered from the original tapes is also available.

The Zagreb Jazz Quartet was one of the most important and best chamber jazz ensembles of all time, not only in Yugoslavia but also in Europe, and it was recognized in the world as well. As the longtime editor-in-chief of Jugoton, Dubravko Majnarić, wrote for reissue of the album “The Zagreb Jazz Kvartet”:

“The Zagreb Jazz Kvartet is the successor of Boško Petrović’s quartet, founded on the occasion of the Zagreb Jazz Review in the autumn of 1959 at the Croatian Music Institute. The quartet successfully performed at many European jazz festivals and at the largest US American jazz festival in Monterey. Already at the Yugoslavian Jazz Festival in Bled, they were noticed by the leading European jazz critic Joachim-Ernst Berendt and the most important European jazz managers and producers Horst Lippmann and Fritz Rau, which secured them performances with the biggest names in world jazz. After the aforementioned successes, the quartet practically broke up in 1966 when drummer Silvio Glojnarić left for a one-year engagement in the RIAS Big Band Berlin. They will perform later only on the occasion of anniversaries, among others, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary permanently recorded by Jugoton”.

In December 2021, the members of the quartet received the highest discographic recognition in Croatia, the Multi-platinum award of the Croatian Discographic Association for exceptional discographic achievements in jazz music. The awards were given to the legendary line-up: posthumously Boško Petrović (vibraphone), Davor Kajfeš (piano), posthumously Miljenko Prohaska (double bass) and Silvije Glojnarić (drums).

The vinyl reissue will bring all true fans of this music format back to the years when the world jazz scene had incredible representatives from Yugoslavia. Today’s also great generation of young jazz musicians in the region was created on the wings of this great edition and these great musicians.
