A selection of legendary songs straight from the source

Dr. Jiří Tichota, co-founder and bandleader of the Spirituál Kvintet, has a new look at a rich song legacy. Lured by the LP format, used again for that purpose after several decades, he selected 28 (two less on CD) songs from virtually the entire recording period of Spirituál Kvintet. A fine detail is the fact that the vinyl running time is 85 minutes, reminding us that the same number of years was just afforded to Dr. Tichota. It’s an awesome listen, approximating the highlights of the band’s time-changing lineups. The latter has always stood out for its excellent choice of subjects, competent instrumentation, superbly fitting lyrics and singing that is both distinctly solo and unmistakably multi-voiced.

The inner packaging is reminiscent of all the ongoing members of Spirituál Kvintet and it’s a truly stellar line-up. Dušan Vančura, Karel Zich, Oldřich Ortinský, the Nedvěd brothers, Zdenka Tichotová or Irena Budweiserová and more recently Jiří Cerha, Jiří Holoubek, Veronika Součková and Pavel Peroutka co-created the legend of our stages and studios, many of them unfortunately already following the current fate of these songs from somewhere above. Perhaps they will also be pleased with this compilation, offering a personally selected core of the most important ones. Alongside the music, you’ll find a number of documentary photographs and Jiří Tichota’s look back at the Spiritual Quintet’s now-ended existence. The title does not exaggerate in the slightest: “Zpívat se nepřestane” (Singing Will not Stop). These songs will surely forever be among the most frequently used for pleasure and reflection.
