Whether the trophy was called “Zlatý či Český slavík” (the Golden or the Czech Nightingale), the fact is that from 1963 to 2015 Karel Gott won forty of them. The continuous string of awards was only exceptionally interrupted by the temporary success of skilled competitors and a five-year non-competition in the 1990s.

Karel Gott was thus in fact assured of his rightly enduring popularity with several generations of listeners by year after year of further victories. Musical fashions and singing colleagues have changed many times in the meantime, but Gott’s position at the top has remained firm.

This compilation (a selection of songs and an insider’s text in the booklet by Miloš Skalka) illustrates in forty examples why this is so. All songs are in their original versions, i.e. with the flavour of the time of their creation. They show the stylistic and arranging changes of the repertoire, always ready to support Gott’s unique voice and interpretation.
