Studio Budíkov Release Information

Everyone was pretty tired after a day of film music shooting in Budíkov. Joe after a long trip from Berlin, Tony came from somewhere in the north, where he lives now. Jana had a sore leg and was not much into singing, rather she was looking for a pill to soothe the pain. Even alcohol did not help. It was a long winter evening on November 29, 2018.

I don’t know who, probably Joe, muttered something like why don’t we stop now, since we were having such a hard time getting together, and asked Matej in the direction to turn off the light and turn on the red light... It didn’t meet with any very positive response, but somehow it started. I can’t report much more about it, because I fell into a kind of tired trance and a strange relaxation, when nothing really matters, the agreed recording for the film is over, and we just play something completely but casually. “Easy and don’t push the envelope”, Jana announced and it was on.

Eight songs came out, each inspired by (and credited to) the one who started it, who laid down the first notes and established the mood and feeling.

Then the music lay there for a long time and I almost forgot about it. When I put it on after a while, it was as if I did not believe I had anything to do with it at all; at times I did not even believe I was playing it myself. That’s how the others I sent the recordings to felt, too. At first I thought about editing them and shortening them somehow, but every attempt to interfere with the music made me feel a violent interruption of the dreamlike flow.

After about a year, I asked all my bandmates to consider releasing it again. Jana and Joe were both in favor, Tony wrote that each subsequent CD should be a strong piece of writing and performance and that he would rather not recommend a release. It took a while to convince him that this IS the right music, the essence of playfulness and tonal and rhythmic freedom. This is the encounter with the transcendent that music can convey. Let the critics define what genre it is. I don’t know, but it is pure music, the best we played in the dark studio in Budíkov without much thought and invention. Judge for yourself.
